Personal care products and the environment
–
Many personal care products that we use on a daily basis contain harmful chemicals that not only harm the environment but also pose a risk to our own health. Whether you are an environmentalist or not, the reality of environmental damage and global warming is something we all have to face.
While the causes of environmental damage and global warming are widely debated, the effects are undeniable and can we see it year after year. Environmentalist groups have primarily focused on issues such as deforestation, carbon emissions, industrial pollution, and power plant pollution. These are important problems that require serious solutions, and we have many experts that are dedicated to finding them. However, are we overlooking other lesser-known dangers to our environment?

According to Inkwood Research, the global beauty and personal care market is valued at a staggering $552.60 billion in 2022 and is projected to reach $750.53 billion by 2032. We are consuming a significant amount of personal care products each year. Unfortunately, when we use these products, whether it’s shampoo, conditioner, or creams, a large portion of them end up in our water resources when we shower or simply wash our hands. This is concerning, especially considering that 1 in 10 people already lack access to clean water, according to Worldvision.
Additionally, the manufacturing of personal care products is a major source of chemical emissions. For instance, the production of shampoo and shower gel contributes to the emission of harmful chemicals like siloxanes. These chemicals can have detrimental effects on both the environment and our health.
Many mass-produced hair and body care products contain harsh chemicals that are not only harmful to the environment but also to our bodies. In our consumer-driven society, we often prioritize affordability and functionality when purchasing personal care products. To meet these demands, manufacturers resort to cheap ingredients that may get the job done but come with serious consequences.
There are many nasty chemicals that one could list and discuss, but let’s just touch on two in this article: phthalates and parabens.

Phthalates are commonly found in personal care products and can contaminate indoor air. According to Ami Zota, an associate professor at George Washington University, phthalate byproducts can be detected in the urine of almost all Americans.
A TESIE study also found phthalates in hand wipes, dust samples, and children’s urine samples, highlighting their widespread exposure.
Parabens are synthetic chemicals often used as preservatives in personal care products. They are found in various forms, such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. It’s not uncommon for multiple parabens to be present in a single product. Studies have detected parabens in our water resources and fish that we consume.

It’s disheartening to realize that our daily shower or moisturizing routine may harm both our environment and our future. However, by switching to 100% natural personal care products like our Lemvia Pro Hair and Body Care Range, we can make a positive impact without compromising on effectiveness or luxury.
